THE MAESTRO

Primitivo Vásquez Vásquez

Primitivo Vásquez Vásquez is a third-generation mezcal producer from Logoche, San Luis Amatlán, Oaxaca. He began learning the craft at just 6 years old, observing and assisting his father, uncles, and grandparents in traditional ancestral mezcal production.

By 1999, he produced his first batch, an ensamble of Cuishe and Madrecuixe. Since then, he has dedicated his life to mastering the process.

Since 2020, he has been producing in his own palenque, crafting unique small batches from both cultivated and wild agaves. Today, he continues his family legacy alongside his wife and children, with the fourth generation already on the path.

THE BATCH

Ensamble of Coyote (agave lyobaa) and madrecuixe (agave karwinskii).

The process starts with roasting the maguey in an earth and stone pit oven, then cut by hand with a machete, and to a finer consistency with a mechanical shredder. The sweet fibers are then placed in a wooden vat to ferment for 9 days with wild yeast and artesian well water. Once fermentation is complete, it is double distilled in small copper pots.
